第5章 清新脱俗，不务正业

　　At last a lady in opera cape and rustling skirts came down FifthAvenue, accompanied by her escort. Hurstwood gazed wearily,reminded by her both of Carrie in her new world and of the timewhen he had escorted his own wife in like manner.

　　"Don't show any more interest in me than you ever have,"Hurstwood counselled concerning the evening at the theatre.

　　"Did you notice," he said, at last, breaking forth concerninganother item which he had found, "that they have entered suit tocompel the Illinois Central to get off the lake front, Julia?" heasked.

　　"Very good," returned Hurstwood, "only it's the same old thing,'Rip Van Winkle.'"

　　"Ain't going my way, are you?" he called jocosely.

　　"I suppose your people will be here to meet you?" he said. "Letme carry your grip."

　　"How would you like to try subduing London?" asked her manager,one afternoon.

　　"Oh, well, it isn't anything very serious."

　　"Well, we'll have to wait here, boys, until some one does.Twelve cents isn't so very much for one man."
